The artichoke has a long history as a cultivated plant. It was already being cultivated in ancient Egypt and was already known to the Romans as a noble vegetable in the 1st century AD. To this day, the artichoke has a reputation as the "queen of vegetables" and enjoys cult status among gourmets.

Due to its particularly aromatic taste, shiitake has had a firm place in East Asian cuisine for many centuries. It has also been used there for more than 3,000 years and is known as the "king of mushrooms". Its value for a balanced diet cannot be overestimated.

100 grams of dried shiitake mushrooms contain 0.4 mg of vitamin B1, 0.8 mg of vitamin B2 and 12 mg of vitamin B3. They also contain provitamin D (ergosterol), the minerals potassium, calcium, phosphorus and the trace elements iron and zinc. 100 grams of fresh shiitake mushrooms provide 11% of the daily requirement of vitamin B2 and 14% of folic acid, an often neglected vitamin. Ergosterol, the precursor of vitamin D2, is particularly noteworthy. Just 4 to 5 shiitake mushrooms are enough to cover an adult's daily requirement of vitamin D2. The fruiting body contains 7 of the 8 essential amino acids for humans as well as eritadenine. Vegetarians benefit particularly from shiitake mushrooms, as they provide essential amino acids that are otherwise only found in animal products, and thus supplement the diet in a sensible way.
